Bed Bug Prep Checklist
To ensure a successful program of Bed Bug eradication, the following measures must be completed by the customer or maintenance personnel prior to Champion arriving at the location to treat. Champion Pest Management works on the 70-23-7% rule. This rule states that 70% of the infestation will be associated with the area infested (i.e. bed, couch, chair, etc.), 23% of the infestation will be found in/on items within 5 feet of the infestation harborage, and 7% of the infestation may be present outside the 5-foot area. Any items within the infested item(s) (i.e. bed, couch, chair, etc.) and within 5 feet of the infested item(s) should be prepared as requested on this list. All other items outside the 5 feet range of the item(s) will require inspection by the customer and may require preparation/treatment as well if evidence of infestation is found present.
- Remove lines from mattress and box spring but leave the mattress and box spring on bed frame for inspection and possible treatment. BO NOT remove the mattress and box springs from the premises until inspected and encapsulated in plastic (if elected to do so).
- Mattress and box spring will need to be encapsulated in high quality encasements. These encasements and installation are available from Champion Pest Management if you decide to have us provide and install them. Please properly cover all sharp edged of the bed frame if doing the installs yourself. This will help with bags being torn by sharp points on the frames.
- The encasements must remain in place until bed bug eradication is complete or for the minimum time limit of 12 months. All other bed linens are placed over these encasements.
- Place ALL bed linens (blankets, sheets, mattress covers, pillow cases, and pillows) in SEALED plastic bags to transport them to wasn’t and launder them in HOT water and dry in the HOTTEST dryer cycle or by manufacturer recommendations.
- Remove all stuffed animals, pillows, etc. from the ben and place in sealed bags for transportation to the dryer. These items can also be through the HOT dryer cycle to kill bed bugs on or within.
- Remove drapes/curtains and have them laundered in HOT water, HOT dryer, or dry cleaned.
- Empty dresser, closet, and nightstands of all items and place in plastic bags. All items should be inspected for evidence of droppings, exoskeletons, and eggs stuck to items or for actual live insects present. All fabrics must be laundered in HOT water and on the HOTTEST dryer cycle where possible. Dry clean those items that cannot be laundered.
- Once laundered, dry cleaned, or inspected, return the items to a NEW sealed plastic bag or container for storage until infestation is eradicated.
- Remove and discard all unnecessary boxes, papers, magazines, or other similar items by placing them in a sealed plastic bag for disposal.
- Remove all items from walls—mirrors, clocks, posters, other items—and leave in the room for inspection
- Unhook all cables form electronic and electrical devices
- Move all furniture away from the walls—approximately 1-2feet
- Thoroughly vacuum all carpet and fabric-covered furniture
- Vacuum thoroughly mattress and box spring—edges, seams, buttons, etc.
- Vacuum shoes—interiors and bottoms
- Vacuum closet, shelves, and inside drawers of dressers and nightstands
- Place bag out of vacuum in sealed plastic bag and discard.
- Ensure beds in all rooms adjacent to the infested room have linens removed for inspection and possible treatment (if not inspected on initial inspection)
- All non-washable items should be placed in sealed plastic bags and should be inspected and/or treated. This may include electronic equipment (computers, clocks, radios, TVs, phones, etc.), artwork in frames, and other objects within the infested rooms that may require gas treatment.
- It is possible that the technician may suggest other options for these materials which may include a chamber fumigation of items that cannot be treated by conventional measures.
- If you stay in a separate location while treatment is being done, DO NOT take any luggage or clothing with you that has not been treated to kill any bed bugs or their eggs that may be on/in the items you are taking with you.
