Fire Ant Control
What's so Scary About Fire Ants?
Typically, fire ants live in large colonies underground. These colonies can be home to around 250,000 worker ants. Most species of fire ants are not invasive creatures. However, the species known as Solenopsis invicta, commonly known as RIFA or Red Imported Fire Ants, are not like most species. According to Extension.org, these creatures were thought to be eradicated in the 1960s; however, they were later found in the Charleston area and have spread across the state. |
Fire ants, who look almost as if they are on fire due to their reddish appearance, are extremely aggressive. Fire ants will attack anything they feel is intrusive to their colonies. Unlike other stinging insects, fire ants aren't limited to one sting. When they feel threatened, fire ants will latch on with pincers and continuously attack with the stinger on their abdomen.
People react differently to the sting of a fire ant, but many may experience an instant burning sensation. There will usually be a raised, itchy, red welt on the skin at the site of the sting that could last for hours. When the swelling goes down, the victim may experience blisters which have an intense itch, and if scratched open, could result in a serious infection.
