Mosquito Activity after Hurricane Matthew

T​here are so many reports up and down the coast about an increase in mosquito activity. Hurricane Mathew and heavy rains have left a lot of standing water in the area which creates a perfect environment for mosquitoes to breed. Did you know that most mosquitoes don’t travel far? They stay close to home, and it really takes something lie a strong wind to move mosquitoes from where they hatch and into your yard. In other words, the mosquitoes you’re fighting were more than likely born close by; however, given the events of Hurricane Matthew, some of these mosquitoes could have been brought to us.

There are things you can do to cut back on the attacks.

1. Generate a light breeze. Mosquitoes have a hard time flying in winds over 1 Mph. This means a breeze can carry the mosquitoes away. Setting up a light fan can always aide in defense against mosquitoes.
2. Keep your heart rate under control.  Mosquitoes are attracted to CO2. Anything that may raise your heart rate will raise your CO2 production.
3. Wear lighter colored clothes outside. Mosquitoes tend to be attracted to darker clothes because they contrast with the background.

Remember to stay mosquito smart. Dump out ANY container you may see with standing water.
